They are expecting the rebs every day in Newbern…I attended church in Beaufort in the forenoon. The old doctor is about as usual, and the masters mate plaques him almost to death. I tell you what he makes me laugh at the expence of the doctor once in a while…I have known the old doc to give the men pills for sore fingers. The sailors make fun with the old doctor. I am sure he is a monomaniac on the subject of liquor. He has been reported for insulting the men on that same subject. There was one prize came in yesterday loaded with cotton…" VG…plus; additional letter pertaining to ordering clothes and etc from his parents. VG. (3 items)
