Fantastic pair of war-date Autograph Poems Signed by Colonel J.C. Battersby, 1st New York ‘Lincolns’ Cavalry, entitled “Appomattox Apr. 9th 1865” ; “The War of Life” and “Grant and Lee” which reads in part: “...No sword is asked or given/ No horse nor mule detained/ No officer has striven/ To hurt feelings of the maimed/ Twenty-eight thousand heroes,/ Oft masters in the fight/ Asked their victors warrants/ To cross the lines that night/ The generous Grant then ordered/ Some twenty-eight thousand fed/ But where the gallant murdered?/ Where rations for the dead?/ ‘Twas hunger, thirst and vanquish/ A soldier’s portion then/ The dead, the source of anguish/ The living fighting men/ But as the scene is painted/ Grant & Lee are friends/ Both armies represented/And there the fighting ends...” Fine. Jenyns C. Battersby enlisted on July 19, 1861 in New York City as a 1st lieutenant, and was commissioned in the 1st New York Cavalry, he was taken POW at Blue Gap, Virginia on October 2, 1862, paroled in November of that year, and rose to the rank of colonel by January 1865. Present at the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia he penned these poems as a rememberance.
