Autograph Letter Signed, “Capt. John Buck” 3p. quarto, Bloomer Hill [Butte County] California, February 18, 1865, and reads in part: “...I am still at Joe Youngs and shall probably stay till same time in May and then go to the Mountains but that will make no difference with my address it will be Oroville as now the same man that gets my letters now will get them then. I bought a horse the other day for twenty dollars four years old last spring...I think he will pack my blankets in May for I have got tired of packing them myself...the next time I got to Oroville I shall get a lot of photographs and shall send you one to see how an old miner looks. We have had a wet winter this winter so far and the stock has had a hard time, it is estimated that one third of the sheep and one half of the cattle in the state have died in the last six months, it will make stock high here for some time to come... I don’t think we shall have any trouble here in this state now with the rebels they are quite still and I think will stay so. Our boys in this neighborhood are all going to be soldiers, copperheads and all, but copperheads or no copperheads they will have to keep time to the music when they get there...” VG.
