War-date Union soldier Autograph Letter Signed, “John Nilson” Captain 25th Indiana Infantry, 1-1/2p. folio, Camp 25th Ind. V.V.I, Near Goldsboro, North Caroina, March 25, 1865, and reads in part: “..I am yet among the living although much fatigued from our long and wearisome march from Pocataligo, S.C., through South Carolina & to this place in North Carolina a distance of near 500 miles, and two severe battles. One at Rivers Bridges, S.C. 3rd Feb. the other at Bentonville, N.C. on the 21st March where our company left two of its best soldiers killed in battle while honorably defending our country. Corporal I.M. Ren and Henry Delbregher the later was an old soldier who joined our Co. at Cairo, Ill in Feb. ‘62. Ben was buried according to his own request on the field of battle, quite a number of others were wounded, some mortally....Our company had but one whole days rest on the whole route through. We have endured many hardships, almost daily wadding water through some swamp which are very numerous on our route. Two men of our Co. recruits died at Div. Hospital on the march quite a number are unable for duty. Lanning & Murphy came to us yesterday, the old soldiers that are here with us yet that you knew are, two Hinkles, Hiram, Sheere, McGowen, Prather, Hubbard, Weddel, H.H. L.C. Wright, all well...” Fine.
