A good war-date Union officer's, 4pp. 4to., written by 1st Lt. Paul Chadbourn, Co. I, 1st Maine Cavalry, "Headquarters 1st Me. Cavalry", [Va.], Feb. 15, 1865 reading, in part: "…as you will learn by the papers we have been fighting…we had a hard time and came in very tired and hungry. I hope we have gained a good point, but don't think all was gained that was intended to be and it will take another move before the great spring campaign shall begin, so don't be surprised at any time to hear we are on the war path again…the prospects are now that there will be most desperate fighting this next campaign; but I fully believe we will subdue this most wicked rebellion yet…". Chadbourn enlisted as an officer in 1861 and rose to the rank of major, fighting in nearly all the major battles of the Army of the Potomac. He was wounded twice during the war.
