A great Reconstruction era Union officer's letter, 1p. 4to., in ink by Capt. Thomas H. Ferrel, Co. B, 104th USCT, Robertsville, S. C., Aug. 22, 1865 concerning his lack of money at his new post, reading, in part: "...I arrived here on the 19th and have just fairly got encamped in the woods, about three miles from the Savannah River, and four miles from Robertsville, on the plantation of a Mr. Bostick. This is undoubtedly one of the most lonesome places I ever was in. I have several visits from the citizens and if they were able I would have a gay time but they are all poor as hell and the country has nothing in it...for god sake lend me all the money you can spare. I am entirely out and every mouthful I eat has to come from Savannah and cash has to be paid for it...". Ferrel served throughout the war as a member of the 25th Ohio which fought at Gettysburg. A few foxed areas, overall very good.
