Autograph Letter Signed, "F.A. Morgan" 4p. octavo, Rustic Cottage, Plymouth, North Carolina, January 26, 1866, addressed to the parents of a deceased comrade, and reads in part: "…It is long since you received letters from this state written by a more familiar hand and greeted with a much more joyful welcome than I can anticipate for mine. But that hand has ceased its noble efforts of kindness and usefulness. I never felt so much that his life was not entirely lost as since I have been among the mass of Freed people with all their misery degradations and wretchedness so happy and uncomplaining in their squalid poverty and their intense desire to learn and eagerness with which they apply themselves is really sad to witness. And these are the very people that he lost his life to free from Slavery. He succeeded well! He fought the good fight and is now receiving his sword, while we are 'Only waiting till the Angels, open wide the majestic gate, at whose feet so long were hinged heavy worn and desolate!' (Copied from one of his letters). I traveled the same streets at New Berne and Kinston visited the battle grounds on which he so bravely fought the enemy visited the cemetery and read the inscription on the simple head boards of northern soldiers…."
