HOUSTON, Sam (1793 - 1863) American soldier and politician, defeated Santa Anna at San Jacinto and became first president of the Republic of Texas. Houston is the only person in U.S. history to have been the governor of two different states, Tennessee and Texas. Autograph Letter Signed, “Sam’l Houston,” as congressman, Washington, May 27, 1824, 1pp., old label stain in margin else fine, in modern frame with image of Houston and engraved identification plaque. Houston requests a meeting while he is enroute “to West Point as I have been appointed one of the Board of Visitors to that Institution.” Continueing, “I am anxious to see you and converse with you for a moment on the subject of that “Nashville Affair.””
