A great post-war Federal Officer's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Lewis M. Prall, [formerly of 30th Penn. Vols.], Georgetown, Feb. 26, 1866 concerning being chosen to stand guard next to President Andrew Johnson, reading in part: "…this is election day here and…men are on extra duty today and the only time that I have now is while I am waiting on dinner [and] as soon as I get that I must go to my post….You want to know how my trial came out - in reference to the Dutch - it is all right I was not even on trial, he reported me but the Superintendent would not listen to him so it was not taken notice of…I am going to vote here today just to try and beat the Secessionist of this town that is on one of the tickets here…I can tell you that my partner and myself were picked out from the force to go to do duty at the President's House every Tuesday evening as we were considered by the Sergeant and superintendent to be the finest looking officers on the force and therefore the kind asked for by the President as my post is beside the President…". The original transmittal cover is included.
