A great ca. 1850, California gold Irish miner's valentine, 2pp. 4to., written in pencil by a certain Patrick B. to the love of his life Lizzie, reading, with his phonetic spelling slightly corrected, in part: "…February Fourteenth…I fell in luv with you the first time I ever sore ye and I'd have you got [if] only for that feller that always a follerin ye round every ware. Small blame to him fore that same…[?] your big blue eyes that as brite an' as sharp as a [?] bewhich every body you look at an' then your round red cheeks that look jest like a porter house apple. Ah, Lizzie, Lizzie you don't knoe how mutch I luv ye and if yeye wil only give them fellers mitten and take your own luvier Pat___sure I will be real good to you…them fellier better take kare for if I ever find them laying round loose any of these dark nites id' bee into them…I stand two feet six inches or six feet two (I'm bothered if I know which) in my stocking fete. I'm always on hand when there [is] a free fite. All the gals are after me an if you don't have me Libby Killenwall will take me any time I ask her.
