Cabinet Photograph of Native American sitting atop a number of skins, identified by the collector on the reverse as Will Soule. William Soule (1836-1908) was a wounded Civil War veteran in 1867 looking for a fresh start. He headed west and landed in Fort Dodge where he clerked in the post store. With him Soule brought equipment for landscape and portrait photography. A number of historians say most of Soule’s Indian portraits were shot at or near Fort Sill, Okla. Sill was a military headquarters and an agency for several tribes including the Comanche, Kiowa and Wichita.
