Copper-plate Engraving, "General Amherst," 5-1/8" x 8-1/8," in full uniform, oval portrait, disbound, fine. Jeffery Amherst, 1st Baron (1717-1797), was a prime contributor to the British victory over the French in Canada in the French and Indian War. Amherst was appointed governor-general of British North America, a position he held until 1763. Because of his close ties with many Americans, Amherst refused to take a field command during the War for Independence. He did, however, serve in an advisory role for the British cause.
