Muster Roll of Captain Geo(rge) A. Purrington ... of the 9th Cavalry, February 29, 1874, 32 x 20," fine. Lists Muster and Pay for 60 soldiers, each witnessed, "Geo.A.Purington, Capt." The regiment was constituted July 28, 1866 in the Regular Army. On August 3, 1866, Major General Philip H. Sheridan, commanding the Military Division of the Gulf, was "authorized to raise, among others, one regiment of colored (African-American) cavalry to be designated the 9th Regiment of U. S. Cavalry" The regiment was organized on September 21, 1866 in New Orleans, Louisiana, and was initially commanded by Colonel Edward Hatch. Later they were dubbed "Buffalo Soldiers".
