Yankees Taking Confederate Oath, A rare war-date Confederate soldier's letter by Sgt. Leonard Williams, signed "L. Williams," Hampton Legion, 2nd South Carolina Cavalry, 4pp. 4to., ink, near Bacon Race Church, (Va.), Sept. 17, 1861, and reads in part: " ... there are four of us on the sick list but all up and improving ...we will be back in camp very soon. ... This evening we have heard heavy cannonading but do not know where & who are engaged...There have been a good many Yankees in this naborhood but on the breaking out of the war, most of them have left their property & fled back. There are a few of them left who seem to be true to their adopted state & will take the oath of allegiance.... I do not know where we will be quartered this winter ... we will be compelled to go into the enemy's territory & take some of their cities to quarter in. If we can get into Baltimore I think it would afford us admirable accommodations..."
