A war-date Confederate soldier's letter by Sgt. Leonard Williams, signed "L. Williams," Hampton Legion, 2nd South Carolina Cavalry, 4pp. 4to., ink, Camp Wigfall Va, Jan.13th 1862, the first 1-1/2 pages address the raising of the new born child, in part:"...above all things that you will teach her implicit obedience ... you must teach it self denial .. a love for truth, justice, unselfishness, charity ..." Then "... no talk of winter quarters ... it is difficult to get supplies being over 20 miles from Manassas. Our horses are going down everyday & unless they have better supplies, many will die. ... I heard that the women and children have been ordered to remove from Charleston under our apprehension of an attack ... I wrote a letter to your father urging him to make Greenville his home ... If he & your mother should ever be forced to leave the city, I hope they will take up their abode with you... i send my bills unpaid because we can get silver."
