A war-date Confederate soldier's letter by Sgt. Leonard Williams, signed "L. Williams," Hampton Legion, 2nd South Carolina Cavalry, 4pp. 4to., ink, Camp Wigfall Va, Jan. 22, 1862. Opens with advise on home management, ".. you are now manager & being inexperienced it is necessary that you study. ... to assist you I will make a few suggestions. 1st a good milk cow is important ... buy 300 bundles of fodder, feed 2 night and morning.. you will enabled to make butter & have plenty of buttermilk... also get 5 gals. molasses ... the little negroes are fonder of molasses than any thing else ... buy two bussels potatoes at a time. he continues, "There is nothing new in camp ... from the bad conditions of the roads i expect military movements will be stopped for ... the next two months ..."
