A war-date Confederate soldier's letter by Sgt. Leonard Williams, signed "L. Williams," Hampton Legion, 2nd South Carolina Cavalry, 4pp. 4to., ink, Camp Bartow, near Fredericksburg, April 3rd & 6th, 1862. In part, [4/3/1862] " Wm Perry succeeds me in my office of 1st sergeant. Edward Stokes rises to a sergeancy. I am indebted to these two gentlemen for my promotion. I am proud that I got every vote in my muss & all the old members of the Troop. My horse is now improving & looks well. I think he will last in this campaign." [4/6//1862] "There are so many sick soldiers I fear they will scatter disease all over the country. A good many citizens here who were kind enough to take in sick soldiers have lost members of their families ... I would advise you ... not to let them go to the depot when the cars come, especially the Baby and the little negroes. ... Yesterday I was inaugurated into my new office. ... The enemy are about 25 miles from us in strong force ... we are under marching orders but can not tell when or where we will move."
