A war-date Confederate soldier's letter by Sgt. Leonard Williams, signed "L. Williams," Hampton Legion, 2nd South Carolina Cavalry, 3-1/2" 2pp. 4to., ink, Calvary Camp HQ, May 21,1862, in part, "The retreat from Yorktown was a masterly performance & I would not be surprised if it took McClennan a full month or more to get his officers in train for another battle, if he fights at all near this place. If he approaches by land his progress will be very slow." Williams continues, "Lieut. Jas. P Moon(sp) ... committee ignored his claim .. he did not receive a nomination .. he said he would not serve under Lannian, but now on failing to get the nomination he's turned against us and turned around himself in favor of Lannian .. he was previously notted by my being run & elected Lieut over him. I now have no doubt he is now bitter against the company & will do us privately all the harm he can by representing extreme positions in the company. If you hear any insinuations to this affect pay no attention."
