A war-date Confederate soldier's letter by Sgt. Leonard Williams, signed "L. Williams," Hampton Legion, 2nd South Carolina Cavalry, 4pp. 4to., pencil, Georgetown SC., May 7, 1864, in part "I arrived in Charleston at 3 o'clock Monday & left on the NERR next day at 12 o'clock, got off at Kingston & 3 easy day's march to this town through the most barrien and monotonous country I ever saw. ... I was glad to see Charleston had suffered so little from the shells of the Yankees. I noticed grass growing in East Bay. ... I expect the conflict in VA has begun. May God prosper our armies. ... we can get Charleston papers on the 2nd day after publication. This is the most out of the way place I have ever been in."
