A war-date Confederate soldier's letter by Sgt. Leonard Williams, signed "L. Williams," Hampton Legion, 2nd South Carolina Cavalry, 6pp. 4to., pen, Camp Jackson, near Georgetown (SC.), May 9, 1864, in part "I was told in Charleston that we were coming to the Egypt of SC but have found it rather a desert ... I rode through the all the streets & though the houses seemed occupied, scarcely a person can be seen... many of the rice plantations have been abandoned ... We heard of the commencement of the battle on the Rhappahanonock & today there is a rumor that the battle has been fought & that our army is again victorious & that the enemy are in full retreat having lost several thousand prisoners, though often news is not alltogether reliable. I am ready to believe it & rejoice over it. If it is so & this victory proceeds to a route & the Yankees driven back across the river, I think their last trump has been played & their hopes of success utterly extinguished."
