A war-date Confederate soldier's letter by Sgt. Leonard Williams, signed "L. Williams," Hampton Legion, 2nd South Carolina Cavalry, 3pp. 4to., pen, Camp near Georgetown (SC.), May 12, 1864, in part "We are all much elated with the glorious news of victory from all directions. Our joy is tempered by the possibility of erroneous or premature dispatches. Grant has certainly been terribly foiled so far in his purposes, but the battle was indecisive & and he may yet fight a greater battle. From the West the news is somewhat conflicting. ... A merciful God assuredly blessed our efforts. The enemy have met with an unbroken series of disasters. The spirit of their army must be broken. The enlistment of 3 years troops expiring, their currency depreciating, & the approaching presidential campaign will, I feel confident, bring out a strong peace party, strong enough I think to elect a peace candidate for their next president. I begin to look forward to a time not very distance when we all will be permitted to return to our peaceful homes. ... from VA ... that Gen'l Lee had repulsed a scout attack near Spottsylvania ..."
