A war-date Confederate soldier's letter by Sgt. Leonard Williams, signed "L. Williams," Hampton Legion, 2nd South Carolina Cavalry, 2pp. 4to., pen, Camp Jackson (SC.), June 8, 1864. In part, "The news from VA continues to be favorable as Gen'l. Lee says under God our successes are all that we could expect. I would be glad to have as favorable accounts from Gen'l. Johnson, though the state of things in Georgia are by no means disheartening. The Yankees so far in all the various encounters have been worsted & in addition to the army proper, the State troops of Georgia I hear number 40,000 more. I think we have troops enough to settle the fate of Sherman. ... I held an election for 6th Sergt. Blyth was elected. I have now 80 men in the company."
