A war-date Confederate soldier's letter by Sgt. Leonard Williams, signed "L. Williams," Hampton Legion, 2nd South Carolina Cavalry, 2pp. 4to., pencil, Chisholmville, SC, Oct 5, 1864. In part, "I believe every one black & white in this regiment has been sick. There is less sickness now than at any time since coming here. I will be glad to see cold weather... I think everything now in VA looks hopeful. Hood knows Sherman's strength at Atlanta, he has placed himself in Sherman's rear which I think must soon compel the evacuation of Atlanta & subject Sherman to almost certain defeat- I have shared in the gloom which has been hanging over the community, but I am now in good spirits & hope this year's campaign will close with bright prospects ..."
