A touching war-date Virginia doctor's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written in pencil by Norman N. Nelson, Middleway, [Va.], February 12, 1862 to his brother Capt. Hugh M. Nelson 6th Virginia Cavalry concerning the death of his son, in part: "I am much obliged to you for your kind and sympathizing letter received shortly after the death of my only…beloved son…my boy is now I hope enjoying a blissful immortality with his sainted mother…there are two members of your company in this neighborhood of your company…one Mr. Hite Willis' son [Pvt. Nathaniel Hite Willis who had a horse killed from under him during the Gettysburg campaign and was WIA at Trevillian Station 5/11/64] who are patients of mine…who has been very ill with all the…symptoms of typhoid fever…Jonny Watson [Pvt. John J. Watson WIA Third Winchester Oct. 19, 1864] is also recovering but not yet fit for duty…they both intend to reinlist for the war…I have had twelve cases of measles amongst the rest…".
