A fine ink on paper hand drawn brown ink sketch by Confederate Brig. Gen. Lloyd Tilghman (1816-1863) who was captured at the capitulation of Fort Donelson in February 1862. The sketch was drawn on July 12, 1862 at Fort Warren, Boston Harbor, Massachusetts, one of the North's first military prisons for high-ranking Confederate officials, and is perhaps a self-portrait of Tilghman as a POW since the subject strikes a strong resemblance to the forlorn general. Mounted to a larger black mat with contemporary provenance reading, in full: "Sketched by Genl. Lloyd Tilgham. Whilst a prisoner of war at Ft. Warren, Boston, Mass. and given to his son Slidell." The sketch itself measures 8" x 10" by sight while the black mount measures 14" x 16". Suitable for framing with minor breaks affecting the mount while the sketch itself is near fine.
