LEE, Robert Edward (1807-1870) Confederate general commanding the Army of Northern Virginia, Southern hero. LEE, Mary Anna Randolph Custis (1807-1873) was the wife of Confederate General Robert E. Lee and the only surviving child of George Washington Parke Custis, George Washington's stepgrandson. Signed book with perfect signature, "R.E. Lee," on reverse of title page. On the front of the title page, a presentation, "Edward S. Joynes, from his friend, Mary Custis Lee." The book, "Memoirs Of The War In The Southern Department Of The United States by Henry Lee ... A New Edition With Revisions And A Biography of the Author By Robert E. Lee," New York. 1869. 620pp. plus plates and maps. Frontispiece portrait. Large octavo, rebound in leather with gold leaf spine title, embossed Lee coat-of arms on cover, excellent. Third edition, after the first of 1812, covers all the major battles and characters of the American Revolution, with an appendix containing biographical sketches of some of the participants. Edward S. Joynes co-authored "Robert E. Lee - Centennial Celebration of His Birth Held Under the Auspices of the University of South Carolina on the Nineteenth Day of January, 1907."
