DIX, John A. (1798-1879). Union general who, as Treasury Secretary under Buchanan before the Civil War broke out, issued the famous order to shoot anyone attempting to take down the American flag. Document Signed, "John A. Dix," as commissioner of the Canal Fund, on a check, Albany, July 23, 1836, in the amount of $24, 840.95, to E. Olcott, 7" x 5-1/2," mounted.
