PALMER, John McAuley (1817-1900) Union general, who commanded the 14th Corps during the Atlanta Campaign and was later in charge of the Department of Kentucky. After the war he was Governor of Illinois, U.S. Senator and candidate for the Gold Democrats as President in 1896. Massive archive of John McAuley Palmer during the period when he was an attorney in Illinois, 1857-1859, 40 documents, various dates, various sizes, most manuscript, some preprinted and filled out in hand. Fifteen of the documents are signed by Palmer in the third person, (4) "Palmer for Defence," (4) "Palmer & Rice," or (7) "Palmer and Pitman." These are primarily documents pertaining to failed business transactions. The balance of the documents all relate to Palmer court cases but do not appear to be signed by Palmer. John Palmer had a close relationship with Abraham Lincoln. At the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia, 1856, he urged Lincoln's nomination for Vice President. He also vigorously supported Lincoln's campaign against Stephen Douglas for the Senate in 1858. At the Illinois state Republican convention in 1860, he introduced the resolution endorsing Lincoln for the Presidency. Later he served as a Lincoln delegate to the 1860 Republican national convention.
