A good early Northern home front letter, 4pp. 8vo., written in ink by Sophia E. Robbins, South Abington, [Mass.] mid August 1861 to her soldier brother who was a member of the 7th Massachusetts Vols concerning a political convention going bad, reading, in part: "…Edwin improves very much in stitching his shoes. He has a number of callers everyday to see him work…we hear that more volunteers are wanted as soon as possible. I think some of…Co. E will go…the Democrats in Maine held a convention [on] [Aug 14th which broke up in a row from a long string of Resolutions…'resolved…in our judgment the discontented feelings…[was] caused by [the] agitation of the slavery question…a day of retribution will soon overtake the Republican leaders for their unwise and unpatriotic course in preferring to carry out a party dogma…from the horrors of civil war and national ruin. They appeal t all true friends of the Union to join them in an effort to save the Union. There were a few sensible ones who thought the war was the only way to save the Union.' I hope the Democrats will not make any more trouble…they are about the same as secessionists…". VG
