In part, ".. our destination at the last moment was changed .. to report to Flag Officer in Hampton Roads .. that more gun boats were required in the Chesapeake Bay. ... We arrived at Fort Mifflin, anchored and commenced without delay taken on board our powder, shot and shell. ... Now what can I say about the "Union" - the vessel herself is everything I could desire. I am more than satisfied with her. ... I am delighted with all the officers, they are an exceedingly gentlemanly set of men. ... This morning I made them and address after reading the Articles of War. ... I will not allow any swearing, drunkenness, or any other destruction of good morals on board ..."
