War-date Union soldier's letter, 4p. octavo, written in ink by Pvt. Silas W. Baxter", Co. C, 11th New York Cavalry, Camp Relief, [Washington, D. C.], Scotts 900, February 22, 1862, and reads in part: "...there was a man stole all of my citizens clothes and run away and has not been caught yet. We had a grand parade today and marched to the church in double file where Washington's farewell address was read and after that prayer and then marched back in line of battle in close column to the barracks...our captain says that this company is learning to drill the fastest of any company in the regiment...there is about 450 cavalry here about 300 of the 78 New York and about 80 of the marines...the cannon is just booming for three o'clock in honor of Washington 100 guns was fired at noon...the cannon has just accidentally gone off and tore one of the marines hands all to pieces with the rammer...". Also included is the original transmittal cover addressed to family in Pennsylvania. VG.
