A poignant war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by 1st Sergeant Getty, Co. C, 5th US Cavalry, Warrenton, Va., July 31, 1863 to the mother of a murdered comrade, in part: "Painful as this is for me to communicate to you…I think it is my duty to do so. On the 21st of this month while our Brigade of Cavalry…was in the mountains at Manassas Gap watching the movements of the enemy we ran into an ambushcade of Rebel infantry on the road leading to Front Royal…the Rebels opened a volley of musketry on us from a whole brigade when Corporal George T. Crawford was killed along with some others…he and I were great friends…we were continually together…he was buried at a little tree in Manassas Gap about three miles north of Front Royal there is a dwelling house only a few yards from it…". Very good
