War-date Union soldier's letter by 1st Sgt. John E. Pickard (WIA Missionary Ridge, Nov. 25, 1863) , 8th Kansas Vols. 3pp. 8vo., General Field Hospital, Ward F, tent 4, Chattanooga, Tenn., Dec. 6, 1863 to Capt. Robert Flinkinger with Flinkinger's reply on verso and signed and approved by future BBG John A. Martin. Reads in part: "John E. Pickard of your company is confined in this Hospital and wishes me to inform you of his situation which indeed is not very pleasant, he is quartered in a large and open tent without fire, and but very little to eat, since he came here on the 1st inst. he has suffered very much from his wound, in consequence of having taken cold from exposure, he therefore wishes you to recommend him for a furlough...if possible write out a recommendation, sign it, also get the signature of the Col. and transmit it to him the address is as follows Ward F tent No. 4, General Field Hospital, Chattanooga, Tenn. P.S. Reeves for John E. Pickard." On the verso in pencil is Capt. Flickinger's response, reading, in full: "Sir having full confidence in the integrity of 1st Sergt. John E. Pickard who was wounded at Mission Ridge Sept. 25, 1863, and is now in your Hospital, hope you will use your influence to procure him a furlough...". Finally, Pickard's request is approved and signed by Brevet Brigadier General JOHN A. MARTIN (1839-1889) with rank. VG.
