Autograph Letter Signed, "N. Prime" 89th Indiana Infantry, Fort Pickering, Tennessee, March 15, 1863, with cover, it reads in part: "...I have often heard people say the army was an awful hard place for a Christian to get along. Now this is a mistake, I dont see any thing to hinder a man from living a religious life here, for my part have become disgusted at wickedness, and I do think any man that has any respect for Christianity and be here and see poor mortal being cursing swearing and doing all manner of meanness, one day, and in a few days pass off in the silent tomb, without the sympathy of any one or even a pitiful tear, it is enough to make anyone think of setting an example whether they do it or not...While I am writing I can hear the Negroes singing and shouting and thir Dogs a barking. Some of our Boys says the Niggars in 'Shilo' are raising Hell. "Shilo' is the name of the contraband Niggar town, that I have told you about...I must tell you what our Major Cuberly done the other day. Two men gave him a hundred dollars to take them and a small lot of goods across the river, and as soon as they landed he had them arrested and searched and found a lot of medicines, said to be worth two thousand dollars. Cubberly has charge of a steam boat that is constantly on the lookout..." Fine.
