A rare war-date printed Union broadside circular, 1p. 8vo., "Headquarters, Twenty-Fifth Army Corps, Army of the James, In the Field, Va., Feb. 20, 1865" issued by Major Gen. Godfrey Weitzel honoring his men with the following request, in part: "In view of the circumstances under which this Corps was raised…the peculiar claims of its…members upon the justice and fair dealing of the prejudiced…of the troops which deserve those equal rights that have been…denied…the Commanding General has been induced to adopt the Square as the distinctive badge of the 25th Army Corps. Wherever danger has been found and glory to be won, the heroes…have fought for immortality…they looked upon their badge with pride…for it is a symbol of a life of heroism and self denial…Soldiers! To you is given a chance, in the Spring Campaign, of making this badge immortal. Let History record that…thirty thousand freeman…shattered the prejudice of the world…". Also, included is a bold war-date clipped signature of Major General GODFREY WEITZEL (1835-1884) adding a closing salutation and rank. A great pair suitable for framing. Both VG.
