Autograph Letter Signed, "John D.S. Pringle" 18th Pennsylvania Cavalry, 2p. octavo, May 8, 1865, Winchester, Virginia, with cover made of purple stock, and reads in part: "...I am well and hearty as ever and all the boys from Brownsville and vicinity is well...we have very good times here at present and the sun is very hot. But I hope it wont be long until we are discharged for civil law is in force in Winchester. All the people is putting in their crops and building fences and that is a good sign...I don't suppose we will be discharged until the last for there is but our Brigade of cavalry in the valley and there must be some force or other here for the present until things get settled a little more than it is and the Bushwhackers is getting scarce shows which way the wind blows..."
