HATCH, Edward (1832-1889) Union general who began the Civil War as a company commander, and finished it in charge of a division. His regiment fought at Island #10, and participated in the advance on Corinth. He also took part in Grierson's raid through Mississippi. In December of 1863 he was wounded in Moscow, Tennessee. Under Andrew Smith he took part in operations against Forrest in the summer of 1864. He won a brevet as brigadier general for his actions at Franklin during Hood's invasion of Tennessee. After the Civil War he was commissioned colonel of one of the two newly created black cavalry regiments later known as the Buffalo Soldiers. Signature removed from an autograph album, "Edward Hatch Brvt. Maj. General U.S. Army", 7-1/2x2-1/2". Light feathering in "Army" else VG.
