WILLCOX, Orlando Bolivar (1823-1907) Union general who was wounded and captured at Manassas, led commands at Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Knoxville, and during Grant's Overland campaign. Awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions at Manassas.Autograph "OB Willcox Brig. Genl. U.S.A." ...plus; signatures of John Andrews governor of Massachusetts and Fernando Wood (1812-1881) one of many New York Democrats sympathetic to the Confederacy, called 'Copperheads' by the staunch Unionists. During his second mayoral term in January 1861, Wood suggested to the City Council that New York secede and declare itself a free city, to continue its profitable cotton trade with the Confederacy. Wood's Democratic machine was concerned to maintain the revenues (which depended on Southern cotton) that maintained the patronage. VG. (3 items)
