Autograph Letter Signed, "Geo. R. Lennard Major & A.C.M.D. S. Ca." 52nd Pennsylvania Infantry, 1p. quarto, Office Asst. Comy of Musters D S. Ca., Hilton Head, South Carolina, August 25, 1865, addressed to Major Wheelock Pratt of the 55th Massachusetts Infantry, and reads "I have the honor to transmit herewith one copy of your muster out roll as Captain and one copy of muster in as major 55th Mass. Vols...." Fine. The 55th Regt. Mass. Vol. Inf. was the second military organization composed of men of African descent to be raised in Massachusetts. Its nucleus was the men left over from the recruits of the 54th. They were heavily engaged at James Island and Honey Hill.
