HAWLEY, Joseph R. (1826 - 1905) Union major general who led his men at Bull Run, Port Royal, and at Richmond and Petersburg. Manuscript Letter Signed, "Jos. R. Hawley", 1-1/4p. quarto, January 7, 1886, U.S. Senate Chamber, addressed to the Editor of the Berkshire County Eagle, it reads: "...I believe my answer to your inquiry of November 23, as to whether I was engaged for Memorial Day, 1886, was somewhat indefinite, and I promised to write you again. Upon inquiry in Hartford I find that the request made to me last June to hold myself disengaged for 1886 was a formal one from Robert O. Tyler Post and that I was considered being engaged...."
