A great circa 1860 CDV of General Robert E. Lee dressed in his pre-war Federal uniform. Perhaps one of the Lee family's private copies of this iconic image as it is inscribed on the verso by his son George Washington Custis Lee, in full: "Gen. R. E. Lee. From a Daguerreotype taken prior to 1861. G. W. C. L." Excellent contrast, tone and clarity making this CDV one of the best examples of this image in the marketplace today as available are either grainy or poor quality. Obtained from the archive of the editor of Miller's Photographic History of the Civil War who most likely was given the image for publication by Lee. Negligible glue stains, else fine
