DAVIS, Varina Banks Howell (1826 - 1906), American author who was best-known as the First Lady of the Confederate States of America, second wife of President Jefferson Davis. Varina married Jefferson Davis, her senior by 18 years, in 1845. Rare Signed Photograph, "Mrs. Jefferson Davis," albumen, oval 3-1/2' x 5," on 7" x 8-1/2," embossed mount, with identified photographer C(harles) E. Emery, Colorado Springs, Colo., slight chip to mount upper left else fine. The presentation in Davis' hand, "To James Smith, son of her dear old friends, James and Mrs. Smith, from Mrs. Jefferson Davis, Jan.20th 1904." Varina's daughter, "Maggie" Howell Davis Hayes, had moved to Colorado in 1885. This was probably taken on one of Varina's visits.
