John Brown's Fort, Harpers Ferry, West Va., published by Keystone View Company, Meadville, Pa, a black/white real photographic image. RP, B/W, fine. John Brown was the most notorious of the violent abolitionists. On Sunday evening, October 16, 1859, his 21-man "army of liberation" seized the Armory and Arsenal and several other strategic points at Harpers Ferry. His initial objective was to seize the 100,000 weapons at the Arsenal. Militia companies and federal troops from Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia responded quickly. Robert E. Lee and J.E.B. Stuart were present. Thirty-six hours after the raid begun, with most of his men killed or wounded, a storming party of 12 U.S. Marines broke down the door of the Armory's fire engine house (now known as "John Brown's Fort"), taking Brown and the remaining raiders captive.
