?" bold headline on circa 1864 poster likely published by Republican party for the second Lincoln presidential campaign of 1864. Broadside, 9½ x 16. Proclaims: "The Copperheads assert the War has ruined the country; that we can never pay our debt; and the war has proved a failure. Look at these diagrams based on official records and see if this is true." Three diagrams make a pretext / purport to illustrate the (captioned) "WHAT WE HAVE DONE" comparing the loyal [Union] states to the "rebel" states financially…and "WHAT WE CAN DO" financially. A bold graph compares the U.S. to the British (population and property-wise) over period 1790 through Civil War years, projecting it onward to 1880 when all numbers will increase, thus illustrating greater advances for U.S.! Two columns below compare in a rather convoluted manner, the "loyal" union (and lower sections "restored to loyalty") to the "Rebel" population and its area, indicating the war was decidedly not a failure, and specifically mentions "Territory still in Rebel hands" all to prove that much already accomplished by the war ! "Our prosperity has continued to increase in spite of the War and the moment it has ended we shall go ahead in Wealth and power with rapidity hitherto unknown to any nation on the face of the globe. …IS NOT SUCH A NATION ABLE TO CARRY ON A WAR FOR ITS OWN SALVATION ?" Printed signature on margin "PUBLISHED BY THE NATIONAL UNION EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE, ASTOR HOUSE NEW YORK." slightly trimmed, else VG.
