Campaign letter written by A.P. Ames, 22nd Reserves, 3 pgs., September 13, 1864, Albany, NY, on graphic 150th. Penn Vol Buck Tail stationary Ames writes that on September 5th they left Washington, D.C. and stopped in Baltimore, he writes: "I knew some Northern City was our destination, and so it was. What we are here for is more that I can tell without it is to enforce a draft or to keep the election quiet. I think that there will be a fuss that day for it is all excitement here now"…"This is a great Copperhead place I ever was in. They are most all for McClellan, and they say they are a mind to clear out if we do not vote for McClellan, but then I hardly think that they will try it. I wish they would and then we will have some fun. I guess it would be the greatest clearing they ever done. There were several of our boys put in the station house for saying they were for Lincoln, but out captain heard of it and took a few men and down and released them". Ames continues to speak of Bounties and wounded soldier and some personal information. Seems that if you were a supporter of Lincoln, and in Baltimore, you took the chance of being thrown in the "Station House (Jail)! Fine.
