TIDBALL, John C. Tidball (1825-1906) began his active service as a Second Lieutenant of Artillery during hostilities with the Seminoles in 1849. Subsequent assignments included an active role in John Brown's capture at Harpers Ferry. Tidball entered the Civil War as a Captain in the 2nd Artillery, and rose rapidly through the officer corps to finish the war as a Brevet Major-General. Document Signed, "Jno. C. Tidball," on muster roll April 7, 1872, Yerba Buena Island, Cal., 18" x 11-1/2," fine.
