1 ½ page neatly penned letter (tiny writing, but easily read) by scholar Charles Gross from Cambridge, Mass., March 29, 1897 to Judge Mayer Sulzberger, president of J.P.S. "…In returning to the Society the translation of the 'MARRANOS,' I do not see how we can publish the work in its present form. It teems with bad English…the work, if well translated would…be welcome by most of our readers [but] parts of it are crude and marred by sensationalism." Charles Gross (born Troy, N.Y. 1857) noted historian and professor at Harvard had active career in Jewish life; was charter member of American Jewish Historical Society. Exc.+
