GOTTHARD DEUTSCH (1859-1921). Two page letter (each on his personal, printed letterhead) with address "Hamilton County, Ohio" (4 ½ x 7) Jan. 3, 1899 to Judge Mayer Sulzberger, Phila. Entirely penned in his small, neat, easily read hand with autograph signature. Expresses his admiration for Judge and quoting a German axiom, he continues: "I write in the interest of Samuel L. Davidson in order not to be guilty of [Hebrew words]. He's one of the typical cases amongst Russian Jews well instructed in rabbinical and New Hebrew literature and unfit for practical life. He is a pensioner of Jewish charities…[those] here are unable to cope with their task and their stipends are not sufficient to keep a young man and his family. He is unfit for sweat-shop work and for peddling, the only two kinds of business by which people of his caliber can earn a livelihood. He applied to me for position of a 'Shammes' but applicants are much more numerous than the position. Besides misery and the national vice of Russian Jews, cigarette-smoking, have made of him a physical wreck. If he can be cured it would be a [Hebrew word] he is certainly a deserving case." Lightest aging, but exc.+ With two fine bio sketches of Deutsch. Among his many accomplishments, he was editor of the Jewish History Division for the "Jewish Encyclopedia;" author of many books and articles (lectures) on Jewish history and literature; served on staff of Isaac Wise's newspaper and publications; also elected to the Cincinnati Board of Education…
