It was Jacob and his brothers who actually established that first "department" store in Illinois and later (1894) opening the first in Phila. and eventually in N. Y. City. Here's a collection of original correspondence, all on fancy, bold printed letterheads "THE FEDERATION OF JEWISH CHARITIES OF PHILADELPHIA" (4 letters 8 x 11; 12 are 7 x 8 ½ all the same printed letterheads). Dated 1903 through 1907 various subjects; many addressed to Louis Levi, the President of "Jewish Immigration Society / Phila." Three letters bear bold original signatures of Jacob Gimbel; another with secretarial signature of his. One letter includes printed list of officers, directors, etc. of "Federation" on which Gimbel's name heads list as "President." Light aging; all exc. (a few chipped margins, minor).
