Rabbi in Mobile, Alabama (1883-1888) he organized the "Humane Movement for the Protection of Children and Animals From Cruelty;" later rabbi of Kansas City, Mo.; 1892 assumed the pulpit of "Congregation Rodeph Shalom/Phila. (the bold printed letterhead) on single sheet letter penned entirely in his hand Aug. 9, 1917 to CHRISTIAN BISHOP THOMAS J. GARLAND OF PHILADELPHIA. Consenting to approval for blueprints and "suggested changes" to a [unnamed] joint building of construction venture with the Bishop (likely a Playground association in which Berkowitz then served on the Executive Committee). Also discusses "progresses for selecting funds" and (regarding fundraising) "…have been unable to solicit other funds awaiting the list of contributions secured by Dr. Krauskopf which you promised to send…cannot risk asking the same people…" Light aging, but exc. Accompanied with a lengthy biography of Berkowitz from Jewish Encyclo. He was active in both community and reform Jewish affairs and author of widely distributed works by the J.P.S.
